Famed Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump Leads Gamma Pi Police Forum
In this era of social upheaval and racial reckoning, Gamma Pi has been in the forefront of community discussions about social justice issues. The chapter's Legislative Committee, led by Gamma Pi's Bro. Jason Crump, Esq. and working with the new local D9 Coalition for Civic Engagement, has sponsored a number of public forums to discuss race and policing and civil rights. Hundreds across the Prince George's County community turned out for the latest forum, Police Reform II, a virtual discussion featuring famed civil rights attorney Bro. Benjamin Crump, that was help on Thursday, June 17 on the Zoom Webinar platform. The event was also broadcast on Facebook. In addition to visiting Attorney Crump, who made a guest appearance, and Gamma Pi's Bro. Crump, panelists included Bro. Lt Thomas Boone and Captain Joe Perez of the Prince George’s County Police Department as well as Licensed Clinical Counselor Devyenne Stevenson and famed sociologist Dr. Rashawn Ray. The session focused on activism burnout, qualified immunity and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Bill 2021 that was passed in the U.S. House of Representative but has subsequently stalled in the Senate.
