Gamma Pi and Friendship Charities Help Lead Community
Dementia Awareness Workshop
Gamma Pi Chapter joined the Friendship Charities Foundation, Inc. and Imani Temple African American Catholic Congregation, along with Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority, for a dementia workshop and screening held on Saturday, November 2, at Imani Temple on Brooks Drive in Suitland. The purpose of the event was to bring greater awareness about this disease to the African American community. The workshop included presentations on types of dementia, caregivers impact, private memory and caregiver strain screenings, as well as estate planning, finances and taxes. Residents in the community were encouraged to bring in family and friends they were concerned about for screenings, which were conducted by members of the nursing sorority. According to the Alzheimer's Association, this disease is more prevalent among African-Americans than among whites with estimates ranging from 14% to almost 100% higher.
