Omega Man and HBCU Chancellor Provides Insight on Future of HBCUs
Omega men love to be enlightened and the Brothers love to have a cause to rally around. Gamma Pi got some of both at the June monthly chapter meeting, on June 20, thanks to a visit from the Chancellor of Winston-Salem State University Brother Dr. Elwood Robinson, Ph. D. (Beta Phi '98) , who gave a presentation to the chapter about the challenges Historically Black Colleges and Universities are facing today and shared some of the strategies that Winston-Salem State has successfully implemented. Bro. Dr.Robinson assumed the reigns at WSSU in January and was invited to the meeting by Past Basileus Bro. Gordon Everett, who served several terms as the school's National Alumni Association president. Bro. Dr. Robinson's focus was on how WSSU is effectively competing with the larger schools for the very best minority students by offering scholarships, its dedication to excellence, its commitment to increasing alumni giving, and the benefits of the nurturing environment that WSSU and other HBCUs offer for promising minority students. In fact, three offspring from Gamma Pi are headed to another HBCU, Tennessee State University, this Fall on full scholarships. Read the article at Gamma Pi LIVE. At the end of his presentation and after taking questions, Bro. Dr. Robinson was given a scholarship donation check for $,1200 by WSSU alumni in Gamma Pi and a Certificate of Appreciation by Grand Keeper of Records and Seal Kenneth Rodgers and Vice Basileus Tony Lee.
