Achievement Week Program Highlights Scholarship and Education
Every year, Achievement Week is celebrated as Omega Psi Phi’s way of recognizing the contributions of the community within the framework of formally observing Omega’s own founding (November 17, 1911) and history. And every year, Gamma Pi chapter manages to give it a fresh new spin. This year the Super Chapter chose the Greenbelt community to anchor its official program for 2015, highlighting educational achievement through its keynote speaker, Brother Dr. George Thomas, Sr. is a noted Washington area educator and educational entrepreneur. Brother Thomas is currently President and Chairman of the George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy, Inc., a nonprofit community-based tutoring and mentoring program he founded along with Mu Nu chapter in Montgomery County. The Learning Academy's signature program, Saturday School, is a strategic partner with Montgomery County Public Schools.
About 100 people filled the Greenbelt Public Library to hear stirring remarks from Brother Dr. Thomas, Sr., who was also the 2008 Washingtonian of the Year. Achievement Week is also a time to recognize community and Fraternity contributions. Community awards were highlighted by Carolyn Washington (Sisters for Sisters) named Citizen of the Year, Young Robert Alvarez, son of Gamma Pi's Brother Ian Alvarez, was named Student Athlete of the Year and Brother Willie Hines (director of Gamma Pi's Project ENRICH program) as Omega Man of the Year. Thanks to Brothers William Reese and Otis Fowler, Jr. for organizing the program.
