Gamma Pi Brings "Fathers' Day" to Young Men at Nearby Detention Facility
When Fathers' Day rolled around this weekend, many people were able to either visit with our remember their Fathers and pay homage to what "Dad" has meant to them. But for many of the young men -- teenagers, actually -- locked inside of the Cheltenham Youth Detention Facility in Prince George's County, Md., it was impossible to either know or relate to their fathers because they may not have even known their fathers. As fatherless homes continue to be a drag on African American families, men like the Brothers of Gamma Pi are standing in the gap. In the photo above, chapter members pose for a quick "team photo" as part of their annual Fathers' Day trek to the facility to mentor the young men with help and hope. The Brothers spent most of Saturday, June 18, inside Cheltenham sharing their experiences and talking about life. Brother Otis Fowler, Jr. has spearheaded the project for Gamma Pi in recent years. To learn more about the Cheltenham project, watch this feature video by Bro. Courtland Smith, from the "5 Minutes with Gamma Pi" series.
