Omega Men Make a Point to Check Out Omega When "On the Road"

Whether traveling for business or on vacation, Omega men always make it a point to check out the local fraternity "infrastructure" wherever they are, even if it is in a foreign country. That may mean a visit with or call to a local Brother they know, a chance meeting with a local Brother that turns into a social or fraternal invitation, or a trip by the local fraternity meeting house. In Brother Ian Alvarez's case, during a recent trip to Detroit, Brother Alvarez stopped by the historic Nu Omega chapter house in Detroit. At left, Brother Alvarez stands next to the sign detailing the history of the Victorian structure that was built in the 1890's. The chapter was formed in 1923 and purchased the house in 1942. At right is another classic Omega structure in Detroit -- the Charles Wright Museum of African American History that Brother Alvarez also visited. A member of Omega Psi Phi, Dr. Wright was born on Sept. 20, 1918, in Dothan, Ala. He graduated from Alabama State College in 1939. While attending Alabama State College, Dr. Wright pledged Omega Psi Phi. In the fall of that year, he was admitted to Meharry Medical School where he late graduated.  In 1965, Wright opened the International Afro-American Museum in Detroit. The next year, he opened a traveling exhibit to tour the state. In 1978, the city of Detroit agreed to lease the museum a plot of land. Groundbreaking for the new museum occurred in 1985, and the museum was renamed the Museum of African American History. A larger museum was built 10 years later, opening in 1997. In 1998, the museum was renamed the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in dedication of Dr. Wright. It may be Detroit, but it is emblematic of Omega history and accomplishments across the country.
