Yearning to Learn: The Importance of Scholarship

Picture
Each year, the Charles Drew Memorial Scholarship Fund in association with the Gamma Pi chapter awards more than $20,000 in scholarships to students entering college and to students for follow-on support. The Scholarship is open to all graduating Prince George's high school graduating seniors residing within Prince George's County. The scholarships will be awarded regardless of race, sex, religious beliefs, or other non-merit factors, but the Scholarship Committee implores each member to find a suitable young black male applicant.  We are all aware of the plight of our young black men and their increasingly disproportionate representation on our nation’s college campuses.  However, we all can play a small role in addressing this disturbing trend.

The Four Founders of Omega Psi Phi made Scholarship a core aspect of the Fraternity's mission as it is one of the Four Cardinal Principles that define the Fraternity, weaving through every chapter and every member who comprise the body of Omega Psi Phi. After all, Omega Psi Phi was founded on a college campus and each of the Four Founders was involved in providing higher education opportunities to young African Americans, especially to young black men.

“It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It isn’t a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disaster to be unable to capture your ideal, but it is a disaster to have no ideal to capture. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not failure, but low aim is sin.”
