PHOTO of the WEEK CAPTIONS

January 19, 2015. Gamma Pi chapter has a stellar reputation for having put the "action" in the term "Social Action." It was evident on Monday, January 19, 2015, when members of the chapter turned out in great numbers to support two  National Day of Service projects in the metro area held to commemorate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. national holiday.  At left, Bro. Basileus Brian K. Long leads a contingent of chapter members in a community cleanup projects in the Woodyard Road areas in Clinton, Md. in Prince George's County. January 11, 2015. When it comes to Uplift in the community, Gamma Pi chapter is front and center, and it is not always done as a chapterwide initiative. Members of the chapter provide Uplift on their own every day in ways large and small as they live the Fraternity's Four Cardinal Principles. Recently, Brothers Rashid Mahdi (left) and Cruiz Alexander (right) brought Uplift to Career Day at William Wirt Elementary in Prince George's County where they talked about their respective careers as a NIH research scientist (Mahdi) and as a forensic accountant. Gamma Pi Chaplain Brother Brian King is Assistant Principal at the school.  Coincidentally, on Saturday, January 10, Gamma Pi's Project ENRICH college prep initiative sponsored a Career Showcase for the students who participate in the program that is held monthly on Bowie State University's campus. Check out photos from that session on Facebook.

January 4, 2015. The Brothers of Gamma Pi were very busy during the 2014 holiday season. Brothers were running back and forth helping distribute turkeys for Thanksgiving and setting up and holding holiday parties for the Christmas season in the Kentland and Suitland communities almost simultaneously. At left, Brothers load turkeys for a giveaway in Kentland and the photo at right is from the Suitland Christmas party. Itis the only time you will see Santa Que in red! The Super Chapter shined on both fronts, bringing cheer, food and gifts to both  areas to close out the year. For more details about our holiday community service projects, visit our Gamma Pi LIVE blog.

December 27,2014.  Students from Project ENRICH spend a lot of Saturdays listening to presentations, participating in group discussions and reviewing material for college application. Every now and then, the college prep program run by Gamma Pi chapter gets the young people out on a "field trip" to experience the world rather than just hear about it. On Saturday, December 20,  some of the youth from the program participated in Wreaths Across America. In the photos above, student Steadman Cook, from Project ENRICH, places wreaths on the graves of soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.  Click here to learn more about Project ENRICH.

November 30, 2014.  Gamma Pi chapter's public service resume is well-known throughout Omega Psi Phi. Many of its individual members contribute to community Uplift through  both Omega and their careers. Case in point: Brother Judge (Ret.) William D. Missouri (second, left), who recently received the President's Award from the United Black Police Officer's Association, headed by Gamma PI's Brother Tommie Boone (left), who is the elected president of the Prince George's County arm. Bro. Boone, a sergeant in the Prince George's County Police Department,  presented the award to Bro. Missouri on November 15 during a banquet. The award recognizes an individual who demonstrates exceptional integrity, selflessness,  and leadership.  Furthermore,  they must have also contributed significantly to building community and promoting the understanding and acceptance of cultural and racial diversity within their agency or community. Along with Brothers Boone and Missouri are Gamma Pi's Bro. Rod Lawrence and Bro. Gerald Konohia, who were in attendance to show support. Bro. Missouri retired in 2010 after more than 25 years on the bench as the administrative judge for the Prince George's County Circuit Court as well as the 7th Circuit Court.

November 16, 2014. It has been said on many occasions that Gamma Pi chapter has fast become “the cradle of preachers” in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The chapter boasts a hefty roster of Omega men who are quite comfortable behind the pulpit, including being the home of Second District Chaplain Bro. Rev. Dr. Gerald Folsom. On Sunday, November 16, the chapter kicked off Achievement Week 2014 with a rousing sermon by  Bro. Rev. Tony Lee, Gamma Pi’s Vice Basileus, at his church, Pillar of Truth Bible Church in Capitol Heights, Md.  Weaving throughout the New Testament for his text, Brother Lee’s message focused on what the Bible says about the meaning of a true Friend and a Brother, clearly appropo for Achievement Week. He “rocked the house” early on a Sunday morning the day before Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.’s  Founders’ Day. Above, Brother Lee (center), known for his sense of humor and wit, which he infused in his sermon, stands with the men of Gamma Pi who attended the service, including chapter Basileus Bro. Brian K. Long. Brother Lee was initiated into Omega Psi Phi at Beta Gamma chapter (Cheyney University) in 1989. As if that isn't enough. Gamma Pi Chaplain Brian King (also pictured) brought a powerful message about how God can bring life to seemingly "dead situations" in an inspirational Moment of Uplift sermonette to the chapter on November 15 during its monthly meeting.
